Remediation has commenced for a Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) fuel leak in wetlands of near Adelaide Village. The leak occurred when BPL conducted a pressure test on a decommissioned fuel line.
Director of the Department of Environmental Planning and Protection (DEPP), Dr. Rhianna Neely-Murphy shared details of the spill with ZNS News on Thursday. She said, “the line is not in use. And so whatever was in the line at the time has leaked out into the wetland area. We not so much concerned about it spreading out into the ocean or into the neighbouring communities. It has been contained into that small wetland area.”
Neely-Murphy also addressed the risk of spread to the water table. “The risk for intrusion into the water table at this point is very minimal. It usually takes about a month or two for anything that is on the surface to actually enter into the water table,” she said.
The DEPP Director did not provide a timeline for the cleanup of the spill to be completed but said that BPL is in compliance.
