Adequate Funding For Natural Disasters

Adequate Funding For Natural Disasters

Bahamian Media News:

As the peak of the 2024 hurricane season approaches Minister of Economic Affairs, Sen. Hon. Michael Halkitis is assuring the public of the availability of funding in the event of a natural disaster.

The Minister told ZNS News on Monday, “we have a facility with the Inter-American Development Bank so that in the event of a hurricane we don’t have to begin the application process for money if we need to do massive repairs and clean up etc. We already have that facility in place. We can immediately begin to draw down so that is one point of preparation. And otherwise the government, we are in a better position than we were a few years ago in terms of being able to respond.”

Halkitis added that the government continues to work to put themselves in a better position. He said, “all that depends on the strength of the hurricane, on the impact of it in terms of how many islands it hits. But we should be able to respond and as we continue to manage our affairs we want to put ourselves in an even better position.”

The hurricane season end November 30th.
