The women of the Eta Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKA) voiced their views on issues including gender based violence in a mock session in the House of Assembly.

AKA Member Anastacia Palacious used her allotted time to speak about the advantages and disadvantages of media. She said, “as a member of the media, a woman and a mother I share high hopes for where media can take us while being extremely concerned about the risks associated with its use. Cyber bullying is one such risk. It happens when people use technology to harm others through repeated aggressive behaviour that causes fear and distress.”

Angelique McKay spoke about creative industry saying, “we the women in the cultural industry have been the wind beneath each others wings. We’re now asking that you become the wind beneath the wings of your mothers, your daughters, your sisters and your friends who work in the creative industry. It is your support that will lift us to higher heights and that will encourage us to make bolder steps moving forward.”

Speaking on women in politics and leadership was AKA member Alana Major who pointed out that there are “there are 31 countries where only 34 women serve as heads of state and or government. At the current rate gender equality in the very highest positions of power will not be reached for another one hundred and thirty years.”

The ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha held the exercise this past Friday in commemoration of AKA Day.
