Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister with Responsibility for Disaster Preparedness and Management, the Hon. Leon Lundy brought remarks on behalf of the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance the Hon. Philip Davis, at the 3rd Annual Bahamas Diaspora Independence Awards Dinner, held July 27, 2024, at the Miami Marriott Biscayne Bay Hotel, in Miami, Florida. The event, presented by the Bahamas Diaspora Association and Royal Caribbean International recognized six honourees of Bahamian heritage, who made noteworthy strides in the United States.
The awardees were:
Wayne Jones, Police Chief, City of Miami Beach FL; Chala Cartwright, Consul of the Bahamas Consulate Miami; Lawrence “Jabbow” Martin, Vice Mayor, City of Lauderhill, FL; Helen Gage, Founder/Preservationist, Bethel House Bahamian-American Museum, Miami, FL; Clarence Woods III, Executive Director, City of Fort Lauderdale Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA); and Stanley Campbell, Owner, Martin Downs Golf Club, Stuart, FL.
Among those present for the event were: Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry for Grand Bahama Kingsley Smith, His Excellency Wendall K. Jones, Ambassador of The Bahamas to the United States; Curt Hollingsworth, Consul-General of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas (Miami); Latia Duncombe, Director-General of Tourism/Ministry of Tourism, Investments and Aviation; Dr. Andy Ingraham, President/CEO, Bahamas Diaspora Association; Jerry C. Butler, Chairman, Butler Investment Group; Hazel Rogers, Commissioner, Broward County, FL; Cheryl Campbell, Assistant Secretary for Administration at U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, United States; Philip Simon, President of Royal Beach Club at Paradise Island and General Manager of Royal Caribbean International Bahamas; and Dr. Jay Patel, COO, Nashbuilt Inc.,/NABHOOD Board.
