Minister of Labour and Immigration, the Hon. Keith Bell commented on the implications of the ruling by the Privy Council which upheld Chief Justice Ian Winder’s ruling that children born in The Bahamas to unwed fathers and foreign mothers are Bahamians at birth.

According to the Minister a number of people have presented themselves at the Department of Immigration seeking answers on their status.

Bell said, “any matter which is determined by our courts become part of the case law so it becomes law immediately. I think that what is to happen and we’ve had a discussion at the highest level in respect to how do we now mitigate against fraud and deception particularly where the child is not registered and there is no birth certificate.”
