The Bahamas AIDS Foundation has announced a major step forward in the fight against HIV/AIDS with the planned introduction of self-test kits, designed to help remove the stigma often associated with getting tested at public clinics or private doctors’ offices.
The kits will allow individuals to test themselves privately and include QR codes linking users to critical resources. These codes will guide people through next steps if the test reads positive, directing them to confirmatory testing, accurate information on HIV/AIDS, and access to psychological support.
Foundation President Arame Ford stressed that there should be no fear in knowing one’s status. Instead, she said, concern should lie in the risk of being positive and unaware.
“With antiretroviral medications, people can live long, healthy lives even if HIV positive,” she noted, stressing that the key is for persons to get tested, know their status, and access the resources available to them.
Ford also highlighted that the Bahamian government already provides free HIV/AIDS medication, while the Foundation steps in to supply third-line medications for individuals who do not achieve full viral suppression with the first-line treatments.
Beyond increasing access, the new self-test kits also represent the Foundation’s effort to strengthen its digital footprint and connect with younger generations in spaces where they already live and communicate. In addition to increased presence on social media, the Foundation is also developing a new website to serve as a central support hub for persons exposed or potentially exposed to the virus.
The announcement on the Foundation’s plans for the new self-test kits was made during a press conference for the upcoming 29th Red Ribbon Ball, scheduled for November 8, 2025. The annual fundraiser remains one of the Foundation’s most critical events, providing vital support for its outreach, assistance, and intervention programs.
