Bahamas Christian Council President, Pastor Mario Moxey commented on the issue of sexual assault in the country on Thursday. This came after police reported this week that a 91 year old woman was sexually assaulted on Wednesday.
Moxey told ZNS News, “our hearts are broken to hear the news about this sexual assault against a 91 year old woman. No woman in this country should ever been assaulted, but this just reminds us that when it comes to sexual offences like this there isn’t even the boundary of decency that a 91 year old woman is off limits much less children. And so it really brings us to a place of moral consciousness in our nation that we have to ask ourselves where are we as a people.”
According to the Christian Council President a moral failure takes place before a crime is committed. He said, “every crime is preceded by someone having a crisis and we need to be able to address that. We look at crime, often times, as a policing matter when in actuality it is so much more than that. Police handles the situation after the fact. It begins with us having a moral conscience. It begins with us recognizing that the laws that we have, the incarcerations, all that stuff deals with the penalty.”
Moxey said the church has always been interested in the character of an individual. “What if we can change the character of offenders in our nation and bring a moral consciousness back to this nation, as it needs to happen.
