Bahamas Customs Investigates Courier Companies

Bahamian Media News:

Comptroller of the Bahamas Customs & Excise Department, Ralph Munroe revealed on Thursday that customs officers have uncovered the shipping of marijuana through local courier companies.

Munroe told ZNS News there is one company in particular which appears to be moving a significant amount of the drug.  He said , “the major company that we are looking at has been bringing in marijuana almost to the tone of 100 pounds a month we’ve been able to apprehend.”

According to the Comptroller the shipments normally originate in the United States from a state where small quantities of marijuana is legal. “Clearly, it is not for export that the law was allowing them. They can have it for their personal use but they are trafficking in drugs. Persons use fictitious names, they give fictitious addresses but the question is if the name is fictitious and the address is fictitious how is it that the courier company know who to deliver it to,” Munroe said.

Munroe is determined to put an end to illicit practice. He also revealed that tougher measures will be implemented in 2026. He said, “we put them on notice that they have an obligation, if not a responsibility as a courier company and unless they get their act together there will be some serious consequences.”
