The Bahamas Agricultural & Industrial Corporation recognized the competitors of the fourth annual ‘Taste & Tell’ festival held in April in an award ceremony at the agency’s headquarters on Old Trail Road on Wednesday.
Competitors faced off for several titles including: best decorated vehicle for the float parade, best demonstrations by a chef, best mixologist, best candy decorations and the highest number of posts on social media. All of the winners and runners-up were awarded cash prizes.
General Manager, Troy Sampson spoke on behalf of Executive Chairman, Senator the Hon. Darron Pickstock. After congratulating the winners, he said that the ‘Taste & Tell’ concept not only promotes Bahamian grown foods but also showcases the talents of Bahamian processors, chefs, bartenders, artisans and other persons in the food industry.
“Taste & Tell harnesses Bahamian creativity in terms of food culture and the commercial and processing aspects of the food industry,” said Mr. Sampson. “It further promotes agriculture by promoting a second market for Bahamian food items. It facilitates economic value and will protect intellectual property rights as we continue to advance the platform of this concept. This also bodes well with BAIC’s mandate of stimulating the economy via agriculture.”
Dean of the Culinary Art Department of the University of the Bahamas, Mario Adderley, also delivered remarks. He said that the partnership between the BAIC and UB over the past four years, has been a tremendous opportunity for students pursuing culinary education.
“This partnership has been transformative for students,” said Mr. Adderley. “It captures the journey from farm to table and serves as a beacon to Bahamians of how we can not only use our local foods to nourish our bodies but also as a means of commercializing our own home-grown foods to define our future.”
