President of the Bahamas Public Service Union, Kimsley Ferguson recently lamented that due to the increase in National Insurance Board contributions the recent increase in salary for union members is negligible.
Ferguson told ZNS News, “a person whose NIB contributions would have been $70.85 as of yesterday an increase of $17.11 which brings it to 87.96 thereby leaving an increase of $20.39 which basically amounts to $.65 per day, which is no increase at all.”
The union leader added, “I believe that the government could have been even a little bit more considerate and deducted monies in an incremental way. And so again, it appears as if the government gave an increase and took it back.”
The union previously filed a trade dispute concerning the non payment of increases to members based on an agreement between the government and the BPSU. Ferguson said, “its more than one year later and the persons have not received their funding. I want to encourage the government of The Bahamas, yes you would have signed off 32 industrial agreements, now let’s concentrate on ensuring that what you agreed to is expedited.”
In a statement Monday the Minister of Labour and the Public Service, the Hon. Pia Glover-Rolle acknowledged the impact of the increase in NIB contributions to the rise in salaries.
