BREEF Kicks Off the Year with an Educational Community Snorkel

Bahamian Media News:

The Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation (BREEF)
hosted their first public beach activity of the year with a successful snorkel event at Sea Beach
Promenade on West Bay Street, engaging the community in marine conservation activities. This event
centered on snorkeling, offering participants an educational and captivating underwater experience.
Throughout the day BREEF engaged about 30 individuals including adults and kids as young as
8-years-old. Participants received a tutorial on using snorkel gear before entering the water and were
shown fish identification slates to identify marine organisms while snorkeling. During the snorkel,
participants saw a vibrant array of marine life, colorful coral reefs teeming with fish like blue tangs,
grunts, and wrasses. Snorkelers also saw conchs, sea cucumbers and sea urchins resting on the
shallow-water reefs. This immersive experience offered participants a firsthand look at the beauty and

biodiversity of The Bahamas’ underwater world, highlighting the importance of protecting these
fragile ecosystems.
