Brian Carey Lands Scholarship During Marathon Constituency College Fair

Bahamian Media News:

Marathon resident Brian Carey was selected to receive the prestigious Accounting Scholarship Award to study at Huston-Tillotson University during the Marathon Constituency College Fair this past Friday, April 21.

Carey was presented with the award by the Dean of the university’s School of Business and Technology, Dr. Steven Edmond. Huston–Tillotson University is a private historically black university in Austin, Texas. Established in 1875, the University was the first institution of higher learning in Austin. Carey’s superb grades, especially in mathematics and accounting, impressed the representatives of Huston-Tillotson University. He is the first of many 12th graders expected to receive scholarships and awards.

Marathon Member of Parliament Lisa Rahming and her constituency team welcomed hundreds of students at the William Thompson Baptist Auditorium, with more than 15 local and international educational institutions participating. Initially, MP Rahming had envisioned that the fair would accomodate students of R.M. Bailey Senior High School. But after canvassing the community, she realized that she needed to reach an even broader spectrum of students in her constituency to increase their chances of success after graduating. Therefore, students from ten s=neighbouring schools were also invited to attend, resulting in a jam-packed auditorium with eager students canvassing possibilities upon graduation.

“I just felt like I had to do this,” Rahming said.

“I know that nobody did this for me. The only time I heard, ‘You are going to college’, was after I found a job. So, I knew how hard it was to work and go to school. I want these students to have opportunities to work towards fulfilling good careers by obtaining a college degree. Of course not everyone will get a college degree. Technical schools were also represented; we want to wet the students’ interests and appetite.”

Bridgette Francis-Ingraham International College Planning and Consulting Firm partnered with the Marathon constituency to help make the event a success. In addition to the colleges, universities and technical schools represented, there were uniformed corps on hand to appeal to students, and professionals also offered career path advice. Scholarships in music and sports were also available, in addition to educational awards. Financial aid opportunities were also available for students.

Institutions represented included the University of The Bahamas; Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute (BAMSI); Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI); Middle Georgia State University; Kentucky University; and Dave School, Orlando. MP Rahming, who is also Minister of State for Social Services and Urban Development, was happy to have Chairman of Urban Renewal Stephen Dean on hand, as young members of the Urban Renewal Band were also on hand to apply for music scholarships.
