BTC Strengthens Relationships With Local Human Resources Community

Bahamian Media News:

Nassau, Bahamas, October 2, 2024 – BTC recently hosted a power breakfast for human resources professionals from both public and private sectors on HR Professionals Day, themed “People Embracing Change: Pioneering an Inclusive and Digital Future.”

Kerry Scott, Chief People Officer for Liberty Latin America, delivered the keynote address sharing insights on global HR trends and fostering inclusive workplace cultures.

“This meeting with the HR community in The Bahamas was just awesome,” Scott shared. “The community is so strong, and I have met so many great professionals. To have the opportunity to share some of the things that we are doing at Liberty Latin America and to also listen to feedback from the HR community in The Bahamas is the start of something great. From here, we can continue a community spirit of supporting each other and ultimately do amazing things for our employees.”

The event included a panel discussion on, “Innovative HR practices and its regional & local impact,” led by Lashanta Smith, President of The Bahamas Society of Human Resource Managers. The panel comprised of K. Darron Turnquest, BTC Director of People; Dominic Boon, VP of People at C&W Communications; Marilyn Sealy, Senior Director and Head of Communications at C&W Communications, and Indira Collie, Executive Senior Manager of Communications at BTC. The panelists dissected several topics that focused on talent acquisition, using technology in HR, employee engagement and cultural transformation.

Amad Rashad Thompson, CEO of Astute Talent Management who attended the HR breakfast said, “Forums like these give HR professionals the confidence that they need to walk into the purpose of their roles. We are called to cultivate and shape the lives of people as we have the privilege of serving as their leader. I thank BTC for allowing me to be here and I am truly empowered to cause things to happen.”

John Darville, Executive Manager for HR and Organizational Development at The Bahamas Development Bank said, “This event gave HR professionals the opportunity to realign, refocus, and get their mind reconditioned to understand that there are some things that we should be doing as HR professionals. I am grateful to be here because BTC did not have to share, but they have been open and very transparent when it comes to what they are doing, and it is a contribution to the practice of developing humans.”

The HR executives were able to learn about the key benefits available to BTC team members, including its progressive parental leave which provides paid leave for mothers, fathers, and adoptive parents, and is available from the first day of employment. Attendees also learned about the company’s Gender Based Violence Policy and its Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Policy along with its investment in LinkedIn Learning providing all colleagues with unlimited access to courses and certifications.

The breakfast, held at the Rosewood Hotel, was one several events planned by BTC to include Kerry Scott, the Chief People Officer of its parent company, Liberty Latin America, during her two-day market visit to The Bahamas. Scott led a focus group with several BTC team members to listen to their ideas and concerns. She also engaged with colleagues across the business, the presidents of the BCPOU and BCPMU unions, the Director of Labour, and she made a special visit to the Southwest Plaza retail store to visit colleagues and customers.
