Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources, the Hon. Jomo Campbell recently defended the price of eggs produced in the Golden Yolk Program. Some imported eggs have sold for as low $1.69 while Golden Yolk eggs retail for $2.42.
Campbell spoke with reporters on the issue outside of the House of Assembly on Wednesday past. He said, “we can assure the general public that our Golden Yolk eggs are 100% organic. Our chickens are raised on 100% organic feed. They’re not sitting on the dock for two weeks, there’s no chemical involved and it’s all 100% Bahamian labour.”
Concerns have also been raised about the look of the egg packages. Stickers with the Golden Yolk logo have been affixed to egg cartons instead of printed directly on the cartons. Minister Campbell said, “it’s not the packaging or even the shells that make a difference, it’s actually what’s inside that benefits the Bahamian people, that goes towards health and wellness. The packaging can always be repackaged, can always be recolored, reshaped. But what we wanted to do is actually get the produce out to the people in time. We had chicks that were laying, we didn’t want to hold them back and so we put them on the shelves. They’re doing well, to this day we have sold over 8,000 cases of locally produced Golden Yolk eggs.”
The Golden Yolk program was launched in February 2023.
