Commissioner of Police, Clayton Fernander released a statement on Wednesday of this week providing an update on investigations into Chief Superintendent Michael Johnson. Johnson was the head of the Criminal Investigations Department before agreeing to garden leave pending an investigation after voice notes were leaked online allegedly of Johnson arranging with purported gang leader Michael Fox Jr. to have charges against him squashed.
Fernander’s statement said, “the Royal Bahamas Police Force has taken significant steps to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation into these serious allegations. In cooperation with our international partners, we have forwarded files in relations to the case to the UK National Crime Agency (NCA) to aid in the investigation.”
The Commissioner had previously announced that the Special Intelligence Branch of the RBPF would spearhead the investigation with oversight from the force’s UK partners.
The statement revealed that, “John Michael McKeon, Head of the NCA’s Anti-Corruption Unit, and Andrew John Black, a senior investigator will be arriving in The Bahamas from the UK on August 14, 2024, to personally oversee aspects of this investigation.” The NCA investigators will leave the capital on August 17th. Francisco Kyriarou of the NCA’s Miami office will also be in town on the same dates.
The Commissioner also committed to “keep the public informed as the investigation progresses, consistent with our duty to uphold the integrity of our institution and the trust placed in us by the people of The Bahamas.”
