Citizenship Discussion Continues

Bahamian Media News:

Former Attorney General Allyson Maynard-Gibson spoke at a Rotary of West Nassau meeting on Thursday on the issue of citizenship. She recommended that Bahamian women and men be able to pass on their citizenship equally through referendum.

Maynard Gibson spoke with ZNS News on the sidelines of the meeting saying, “a referendum means that we would actually eliminate the discrimination that exists between men and women, Bahamian men and Bahamian women, when it comes to the grant of citizenship. That’s they big picture and I do believe that that discrimination should eliminated. I believe that.”

Maynard-Gibson explained, “I’m pointing out also though that as we live and work and go from place to place today the reality is, as I said there were three points, that there is an adverse economic impact, families are hurting and there is brain and skills drain.”

The former Attorney General said we should do the right thing because it is the right thing to do.

A referendum on citizenship was last conducted in 2016.
