Commissioner of Police, Clayton Fernander called for a review of the Bail Act at a press conference on Monday. He was addressing the latest spate of murders in the country.
Fernander highlighted that persons were granted bail in approximately two to three months of being charged in 2023. He said, “something is definitely wrong with that, we continue to say. And the law says within two to three years if the matter don’t come up within that period then he or she should be entitled to be reviewed for bail, but two to three months, that is something we really have to look at.” He revealed there is a 16 year old on bail who is suspecting of committing four murders.
The Commissioner also spoke to the speed with which cases are adjudicated. “We have to look at the movements of these matters in the courts. We are talking about high solvency rate. So what that tells you, there’s a number of matters that are before the courts. And I’m going to stay in my lane but every stakeholder coming to the table to address whatever challenges.”
