Chief Magistrate, Roberto Reckley recently spoke with ZNS News about the positive changes in the courts in 2024.
He spoke specifically about the expanded jurisdiction of the Magistrates Court. Courts can now hear cases of claims up to $20,000. Reckley said, “many more people are finding resolution to matters that they would have had to wait a long time in the Supreme Court, spend a lot more money, so they’re taking advantage of that and we’re seeing a tremendous amount of volume in terms of cases that are being brought and completed which I think the Bahamian people seem to be thankful for it.”
The Chief Magistrate also looked ahead to 2025 saying the courts will take advantage of technology. “Persons seem to have an issue with how long matters take to get through the courts. I think taking advantage of technology, which is something we want to do, certainly in the Family Islands take more advantage of the access that persons have through electronic media I think we can get a lot more done,” Reckley said.
The2025 legal year officially begun on January 8th.
