Prime Minister the Hon. Philip Davis delivered a statement at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday in New York City.

During his address he spoke about the crises currently underway in Haiti, asking for international support. Mr. Davis told attendees, “when the security council meets on the 30th of September we urge you to renew the mandate under resolution 2793 and to give the gang suppression force the resources to deliver a partnership that respects Haitian sovereignty. It is not sufficient to pass the resolution, identify resources needed and then sit and leave it on the paper of the resolution and not provide those resources.”

The Prime Minister also spoke about Cuba and the economic pressure deepening the suffering of the Cuban people. He said, “Mr. President, in our own hemisphere The Bahamas again calls for the lifting of the strengthened blockade against Cuba and an end to the fuel blockade and Cuban removal from the unilateral list of alleged state sponsors of terrorism. The Cuban people are suffering and that’s why we call for that.”

Mr. Davis called on all states to respect Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace.
