Firefighters worked for a second day to contain an extensive fire at a scrap metal yard near the New Providence Ecology Park on Sunday.
The smoke emanating from the fire could be seen across New Providence affected businesses and homes in the area. Minister of Health and Wellness and Member of Parliament for Tall Pines, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville visited the scene of the blaze on Sunday. He told reporters, “this is the second fire in the Tall Pines constituency surrounding scrap metal operations and it is something that the government is looking at as well as the Ministry of Environment where these particular operations should not be in close proximity to residential areas. Then of course, there has to be more coordination with Environment, the Fire Department as well as myself to do more due diligence of what’s happening to these particular facilities and to monitor them a bit better so that we can know exactly what’s on them.”
According to Sergeant Curry of Fire Services the fire had been confined to the scrap metal area. He said, “the fire, itself has been extinguished, the blaze has already been extinguished but we still have a large area. So we’re warning the public, the general public, call us when you see first signs of fire so that we can act quickly, quickly respond and quickly have that fire extinguished before it spreads.”
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
