Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister, the Hon. Leon Lundy recently told reporters that funding has been allocated in case of a disaster.
He said, “we have gotten the approval for that and we’re activating that. That’s part of what we’re doing now when we take a trip down to the southern Bahamas on Wednesday to see exactly how prepared are they and what resources we could take down to them to help them out.”
According to the Minister financing has been made available to prepare and recover. “It’s estimated to be about $1 million in each fund and then it’ll increase on a need by need basis. Hopefully it’ll continue to increase if we’re not using it that means we’re not threatened by a storm. But if we are strengthen by a storm, of course, we’ll replenish it and as I said based on the severity on the storms that are coming we’ll inject the funds that are needed.”
The Disaster Risk Management Act was enacted in December 2022.
