Exuma Economy Update

Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation and Member of Parliament for Exuma and Ragged Island, the Hon. Chester Cooper gave an update on the economy of Exuma this week.

It was recently announced that Sandals Emerald Bay will close on August 15th to eventually reopen under the Beaches brand. Speaking with members of the media on the sidelines of the Airports of the Americas Conference on Monday Cooper said, “there are 200 Exumians and roughly 425 Bahamians who are impacted by this. I am extremely confident that given the state of full employment that existed even whilst Sandals was open. With all of the new development and all of the shortages that some of the existing hotels experienced I’m confident that we will be able to absorb certainly all of the Exumians into the local economy.”

The Minister is planning a job fair for the island of Exuma. He said, “it’s more than just a job fair though its for entrepreneurs as well. Many of the agencies of government like the TDC and the SBDC will be present to assist persons who want to get involved in small business development. The Ministry of National Security with be there to process expungement of records of persons who would have minor offences on their record particularly offences that they would have gotten during the COVID period. government is committed to expunging all of them.”

The job fair is scheduled to take place on Friday of this week.
