Governor General, Her Excellency the Most Hon. Dame Cynthia Pratt participated in a service commemorating Emancipation Day on the Fox Hill Parade on Monday.
While addressing those in attendance the Governor General said, “I am pleased that the Fox Hill Committee continues to keep our culture, cuisine, values and traditions alive through you series of activities. I encourage you to continue to teach the children about our journey and instill in them who we are. To borrow a quote from the late Myles Munroe, ‘our life in the sum total of all the decisions we make everyday and those decisions are determined by priorities.’”
Also on hand at the event was Minister of Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for Fox Hill, the Hon. Fred Mitchell who spoke about the continued fight for social justice. He said, “the interesting thing is the British government borrowed 20 million pounds to pay the slave owners to set the slaves fee. The just finished paying the loan back that they took out which was then a quarter of the annual budget of the British government. They just finished paying the loan off in 2015. But guess what, the slaves got nothing and the descendants today are still crying out for justice and reparations.”
