Bahamian Media News:

At a Garden Reception held in honour of King Charles III, the Governor-General of the Commonwealth The Bahamas welcomed him “home” after 53 years.

Her Excellency, the Most Hon. Dame Cynthia Pratt, who is the King’s representative as Head of State, extended the warm welcome to the monarch at Government House at Mount Fitzwilliam on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

Among the attendees were Prime Minister the Hon. Philip Davis and Mrs. Ann Marie Davis, high-ranking government officials and other specially invited guests who gathered in the Lower Gardens for entertainment and food fare in an atmosphere fit for such an occasion.

A highlight was His Majesty’s invitation to complete the planting of the Lignum Vitae, the National Tree, by adding soil to the base of the tree, accompanied by students from the Family Islands. The words on a plaque mounted in front of the tree sponsored by the Youth of The Bahamas reflected the “testament to the resilience, strength and enduring spirit of The Bahamian People.”

The governor-general extended a warm welcome to His Majesty, acknowledging his return since Independence on July 10, 1973.

“Your Majesty, you reign over our pristine realm encompassing 700 islands and 2,000 cays, of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas which is home to a resilient and warm hearted people.

“On behalf of the Government, and people of The Bahamas, it is my distinct honor and profound privilege to extend this special welcome to you sir.

“Your return marks a truly historic milestone. For many of us, your presence today vividly recalls that momentous Independence Day on the tenth of July 1973,” she said.

She noted that on that unforgettable night, “you stood alongside our founding fathers as the young Prince of Wales, representing Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, to witness the proud birth of our independent nation.”

And, more than 53 years later, she said, the hearts of Bahamians are filled with immense joy as he is welcomed back, “not only as a lifelong, treasured friend of The Bahamas, but for the very first time, as our reigning Sovereign and Head of State.”

His Majesty participated in a number of events showcasing the youth and innovation, honouring fallen heroes at the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Base, natural wetlands, sports, arts and culture.

“During your brief stay with us, you would have witnessed a modern Bahamas that cherishes its past, while pressing forward toward a promising and productive future.

“Having participated in several engagements, I trust you witnessed our strength, creativity, deep-rooted traditions, and profound passion for our culture, all of which tell the story of who we are as a people,” the governor-general said.

At the heart of this nation sits Government House on Mount Fitzwilliam, a historic estate that has stood for more than two centuries as the official seat of state.  Since the early 1800s.

“Government House has welcomed reigning Monarchs, Ambassadors, Prime Ministers, Presidents and many more.  This afternoon, it is radiant anew because its King is present,” the governor-general said.

She concluded, “We trust that your time in our capital will reflect the legendary hospitality of our people, and we pray that this Royal Visit further strengthens the enduring bonds of friendship between the Crown and the Bahamian people.

Your Majesty, may your reign be long, blessed, and marked by peace across the Commonwealth. Your Majesty, welcome home to The Bahamas.”
