Govt Concerned Over Possible Tariff War

Bahamian Media News:

Minister of Economic Affairs, Sen. Hon. Michael Halkitis expressed concern about the tariffs being imposed by the United States on Mexico, Canada and China at a press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister on Thursday.

Halkitis told reporters that it is a serious matter. “I think we see tariffs were supposed to come in yesterday, I think, and then their were some representations made, according to reports, by the major US auto manufacturers who made some representation and then we saw a 30 day grace period or suspension for 30 days. Even though that is done there’s still the uncertainty as to what will happen at the conclusion of the 30 days. Uncertainty is never good for economies and people who are responsible for planning.”

The Minister said one of the way that we can insolate ourselves is through increased agricultural production, sourcing new markets and making sure the country’s finances are in order.
