Director of Labour, Howard Thompson is speaking out on the growing concern of workplace harassment.
Thompson sat for an interview on the topic with ZNS News on Wednesday. He said, “I’ve seen an uptick in complaint of bosses being overbearing, sexual harassment, racism to downright shouting and cursing out an employee. Let me hasten to say that they’re Bahamian and they’re foreigners. And so in both cases we’re actively investigating those incidents.”
The Director said he takes these issues very seriously. “Most persons that know me know that I try to protect me reputation at all costs. So I take those complaints very, very seriously. I engage the investigation inspection team and instruct them to do comprehensive investigation have their files in order and after that’s done, I would sit with them with the files see what their findings are and I go from there.”
Thompson said for the most part employers and Bahamian human resource managers are very familiar with the labour laws. He hopes to expand the outreach initiatives at the department.
