Minister of Education and Technical and Vocational Training, the Hon. Glenys Hanna Martin and Minister of Works and Family Island Affairs, the Hon. Clay Sweeting led a delegation to Grand Bahama where they inspected the Holmes Rock Junior High School set to open on Monday.
Sweeting spoke with reporters about the amenities of the school. He said, “we have a computer lab. We have a science lab. We have an art area. You’ll see a lot of technology and advancement. They have full WiFi for the campus. So this school here in Grand Bahama is a trendsetter and a replication that can happen to schools throughout the country.”
According to Sweeting the school has been constructed at an approximate cost of $12 million. Three construction companies have done work on the project in the past nine years. Currently, Ran-Mar Construction is putting the finishing touches on the building.
The campus includes a library and a multi use cafeteria that will be used as a hurricane shelter. Sweeting said, “we have a kitchen area, a prep area, a tuck shop area that can be utilized for food prepping services during the event of a storm. I’ll have electrical shutters that can be utilized to bar down the area during a storm. So it’s a sound, sound, sound project.”
Minister Hanna Martin expressed that the school is a beautiful facility which is set to welcome 200 students on Monday, a number that is expected to rise. “We’re hopeful that the children of this community who attend this school, despite the long history of getting to this point, this will be a space in which they can really come and come of their own.”
The school can accommodate a capacity of 800 students.
