Hurricane Dorian Moment Of Silence

Hurricane Dorian Moment Of Silence

Bahamian Media News:

Members of the Cabinet, led by Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis, participated in a moment of silence on Tuesday to remember those lost in Hurricane Dorian. The category five storm made landfall in The Bahamas on September 1st, 2019.

Mr. Davis delivered brief remarks during the event. He said,” six years ago Hurricane Dorian swept through our islands with a force unmatched in our lifetime. It left behind grieve. It left behind destruction. It left behind memories that continue to weigh on our hearts.”

The Prime Minister continued saying, “we pause today to remember those whose lives were taken. Mothers and fathers, son and daughters, grandparents and children, families that were never able to come together again. Their names, their faces, and their stories remain with us, carried in the hearts of lived ones and in the collective memory of our nation.”

Though the number is thought to be higher, officially, 74 people perished in Hurricane Dorian. Mr. Davis said, “many lived through days of fear and uncertainty, clinging to rooftops, wading through rising waters, searching desperately for missing relatives. They endured the unimaginable and then faced the challenge of starting again with little left to call their own. Their courage is a reminder that even in the most difficult of times the Bahamian spirit refuses to bend.”

The Prime Minister mentioned first responders and others who assisted in the wake of the storm. He also spoke about the importance of preparation. He said, “we must continue to build stronger homes, protect our environment and ensure that no island or settlement is left behind.”

Representatives of the Bahamas Christian Council and staff of the Office of the Prime Minister were also in attendance.
