The Land Adjudication Bill and the Registered Land Bill were debated and passed in the House Of Assembly on Wednesday.
During his contribution to debate Minister of Housing and Urban Renewal, the Hon. Keith Bell told Parliamentarians the legislation will put an end to chaos, confusion and the constant fear that one document or court decision could strip a family of land. He said, “we are replacing uncertainty with certainty. We are replacing conflict with clarity and we are replacing frustration with peace.”
Member of Parliament for Nassau Village, the Hon. Jamahl Strachan said no matter their socio-economic status those entitled to confidently state the claim to land.”
Leader of the Opposition and Member of Parliament for Marco City, the Hon. Michael Pintard expressed concern about how the legislation will be enacted. He said, “the people must be able to trust the stakeholders, the government officials, who will preside of the implementation of the bills. Because what you would have heard from us is that while the legislation is important, potentially transformative, if you do not implement it properly there can be unintended and bad consequences.”
