In honor of World Oceans Day, LOM Financial (Bahamas) Limited made an invaluable donation to The Bahamas National Trust (BNT) in support of ongoing mangrove conservation efforts at Bonefish Pond National Park (BPNP).
BPNP has been front and center as the focus of many of the BNT’s recent volunteer and fundraising efforts, as the environmental non-profit seeks to manage the national park that protects the last intact tidal mangrove ecosystem in southwestern New Providence.
Mangroves have a pivotal role to play in the sustainability of our oceans, making their conservation critical. They act as nurseries for marine species; and although mangroves are vital to the health of our marine environment, the fisheries industry, carbon reduction, and climate change resiliency, Bonefish Pond specifically has historically been threatened by the likes of illegal dumping, development, and other negatively-impactful activities. This has led
to a constant need for restoration work.
LOM’s $6,000 gift comes on the heels of World Oceans Day – a global day dedicated to raising awareness about the important role of oceans in sustaining life, and encouraging collective action to support healthy marine ecosystems.
As a mangrove habitat, Bonefish Pond National Park serves as a critical nursery for juvenile marine species and supports ocean health. Earlier this year, the BNT’s Pig Roast 2025 fundraiser raised $100,000 towards BPNP. While the Pig Roast funds will support the building of a much-needed welcome centre, LOM’s donation will go directly towards planting mangroves – an activity the company plans to have its employees participate in hands-on when the time comes.
Such ongoing mangrove plantings, combined with other initiatives like coastal cleanups and invasive species removal, are part of an active 30-year restoration plan the BNT is leading for BPNP to combat the impact of illegal activities.
BNT Parks Planner & New Providence Parks Manager, Chantal Curtis, said: “Bonefish Pond National Park is not only a critical habitat for economically and culturally important species on New Providence; it also serves as an ecological corridor connecting important land and marine habitats. Mangroves are crucial in the fight against climate change, acting as natural carbon sinks and providing coastal defense. It is important for us to raise awareness of the value of what we’re trying to protect and how it benefits us all as Bahamians. Community engagement and participation are key in helping us restore degraded areas of this ecosystem, and corporate support helps to make this happen.”
