Caretaker, Mervie Knowles was taken into police custody for questioning relating to fraud charges. Knowles was publicly accused of taking possession of the home and gaining power of attorney over Ingrid Carey. Carey was a resident of the Home Away From Home care facility run by Knowles.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in Charge of the Northern Bahamas, Shanta Knowles spoke with ZNS News about Knowles’ detainment. She said, “I have Ms. Mervie Knowles in custody in connection with a fraud investigation. As you are aware, the country became aware of a complaint that had been made to our department and the incidents that occurred here on Grand Bahama last week.”
Philippa Carey, the granddaughter of Ingrid Carey spoke with ZNS News last week detailing how Knowles obtained power of attorney over her grandmother and that she had taken possession of the family home and Carey’s pension. After days of public outcry and media attention Carey’s sister, Sharon Thompson produced a 2011 power of attorney over Ingrid Carey in her possession.
Carey Family Spokewoman, Dr. Sandy Bowleg assisted the family in removing Carey from the Home Away From Home facility. She said, “there’s been a lot of greenwashing. So just take that and you let it land where you need to let it land.”
ACP Knowles said Knowles is being questioned in relation to one complaint. “We are hoping that we would get to a position where we can have a successful conclusion but we know that these kinds of matters, fraud matters, do take a lot of time to investigate and to gather evidence before we can talk about conferring charges on someone and putting them before the court.”
Knowles also said that there are other complains against Knowles or Home Away From Home.
