Diversifying the economy of Grand Bahama and fostering economic growth through new partnerships in trade and investments continues to be the priority for the Government and was a crucial point of the Bahamian government delegation led by the Minister for Grand Bahama, the Honourable Ginger Moxey on a recent trade and investment mission to West Africa.

Minister Moxey recently led a delegation on a Bahamas Trade and Investment Mission to West Africa with key stops in Ghana and Nigeria. The delegation consisted of representatives from The Bahamas Investment Authority under the Ministry of Tourism, Aviation and Investments, the Ministry for Grand Bahama, and The Bahamas Trade Commission in the person of Trade Commissioner, Senator Barry Griffin under the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

The mission took the delegation to various regions within Ghana and Nigeria. During the visit to Ghana, Minster Moxey signed a Sister City Agreement with the City of Princess Town (Pokesu) in the Western Region of Ghana, a location with significant historical ties to The Bahamas and the Caribbean and a city that sits on a critical trade route poised for a symbiotic business relationship with Grand Bahama.

A vital benefit of the island is its geographical location; for this reason, Grand Bahama was pitched to continental Africa as the ‘Gateway to the Caribbean and the Americas’ and a prime location for investment.

The Davis/Cooper Administration has identified Grand Bahama as the “Home of Maritime and Logistics”, the “Home of Innovation”, and the “Home of Events and Entertainment.” Minister Moxey participated in high-level discussions with African banks, exporters, chambers of commerce, creative industry partners, small and medium size businesses, and various government agencies to promote the benefits of using the island as a key Logistics Hub for the transshipment of goods to and from West Africa.

The delegation also visited an Innovation and Technology Incubator in Accra, Ghana,

to learn about advances they are making in the Technology Sector and how some of those advances can be shared to develop the sector in Grand Bahama. Minister Moxey also engaged in conversations to attract FinTech, AgriTech, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) investments to Grand Bahama.
