The Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources continues to implement initiatives aimed at strengthening food security, expanding agricultural education and supporting sustainable development across The Bahamas.
Through public and private partnerships, the Ministry has increased agricultural production in junior and senior high schools nationwide. This includes the establishment of chicken coops and layer production programmes, providing students with hands-on experience in poultry farming and agricultural practices.
Efforts have also expanded in edible landscaping, with fruit trees and food-bearing plants being introduced in both public and private schools.
Backyard farming initiatives have been strengthened through the distribution of farming kits, aimed at encouraging greater youth participation in commercial farming.
In addition, initiatives such as the “Golden Yolk” programme continue to support increased local egg production and reduce the need to import eggs from abroad.
Supporting these efforts, the Ministry is strengthening its partnership with Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation (BAIC) to support the development of a national cropping schedule, improving coordination in areas such as climate adaptation, irrigation, and production planning.
Also, collaboration continues with the Bahamas Agricultural Health and Food Safety Authority (BAHFSA) and the Bahamas Agricultural and Marine Science Institute (BAMSI) to strengthen innovation, education, and entrepreneurship throughout The Bahamas.
