“It was a proud moment for our delegation today, as we witnessed our own Marion Bethel, Bahamian human rights advocate, chair a high-level session of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in Geneva.
This session, Ms. Bethel’s swansong, addressed critical global issues related to gender equality, women’s rights, and the advancement of marginalized groups.
Key Discussions and Highlights:
• Canada’s Role in Gender Equality Initiatives
• Legislative Advancements in Gender Equity and Anti-Hate Legislation
• Gender Responsive National Strategy and Employment Equity Tools
• Addressing Human Rights and Gaps in Justice Systems
• Involvement of Men and Boys in the Fight Against Gender-Based Discrimination
• Fewer Women in Parliament – A Global Concern
Throughout the session, the constructive dialogue between countries, provided a blueprint for modernizing employment policies and addressing sexual violence in both the workplace and society.
As Minister of Labour and Public Service, with a strong focus on legislative reform, I couldn’t be more grateful to participate in this informative and inspiring session today.
Sen. Maxine Seymour and I were grateful to attend this 2024 CEDAW session along with Ret. Justice Rubie Nottage, Dr. Pamela Etuk, and the Geneva High Commission of The Bahamas representatives.”
