Minister For Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey recently spoke with ZNS News about the development of Grand Bahama and the role of the government in that process.
She said, “government has to be a part of every one of these negotiations, every one of these developments. The government represents the people. The government is the voice of the people. It’s the government who ensures that people have a place at the table.”
Minister Moxey explained that government has a role in bringing every project to fruition, including the recently opened Celebration Key Cruise Port. She stressed that government also ensures that Bahamians benefit from the projects. “Because I’m listening to the voice of the people and I’m trying to ensure that the rights are respected, the opportunities that we say will come are coming and that we recognize that we are a part of it. It isn’t things that are just happening around us but that we are able to benefit from everything that’s happening. Because if we say that all of these major initiatives are happening they’re happening on Grand Bahama, Grand Bahama is on the move, then the people should be on the move as well,” she said.
Though Grand Bahama has seen great improvement in its economy, the reliability and cost of electricity remains one of its challenges. Moxey said, “you have people buying up property. You have construction that’s happening. We have buildings that are being repurposed, buildings that used to be dilapidated so long. But again, all of this is happening but we can’t have all of this happening and still people are not able to survive because of high power bills. And so that’s one of the challenges, one of things that I’ve spoke out against from day one.”
