Bahamian Media News:

My Magic Superpower

“Good morning, to all you beautiful young ladies, to our esteemed guests, and all who have gathered here today.

It is my absolute honor to look at these bright, young eager faces this morning, and joy to welcome you to the very first Black Girl Magic Summit—a celebration of strength, brilliance, and the limitless potential that resides within each and every one of you.

Today is about more than just gathering; it is about recognizing and embracing the magic that makes you who you are. Magic, that is your courage, your creativity, your kindness, and your ability to dream big and make those dreams a reality.

As the Wife of The Prime Minister, some people call me, First Lady of this beautiful nation.   I am deeply committed to empowering the next generation of Bahamian women — women who you will become, to lead, inspire, and transform our society.  And you, my dear young ladies, are the heart of that future.

You have already shown tremendous leadership, resilience, and brilliance. From your classrooms to your communities, you are shining examples of what it means to be strong, proud, confident and unapologetically you.

This Summit is a sacred space where you can explore who you are, connect with other incredible girls and young women, and learn how to protect and grow your magic in a world that sometimes tries to dim it and at times, cancel your magic.  Many of you are very familiar with the “cancel culture” that is sweeping the world via social media.  Where people are singled out and shamed publicly.  Don’t let that happen to you, nor should you engage in doing it.  It’s dangerous and demoralising. If that happens to you, work your magic and IGNORE it.

How many of you are aware that the success of many institutions and our economy is driven by women. I do. Look at the leaders and lead drivers in education, the church, the media, our number one industry Tourism and political organizations. They are largely women.

So young ladies remember, your magic is powerful and practical. It is needed. I don’t have to tell you that we were all chosen by God, by the universe to be the stargate or portal through which mankind enters this space we call earth. So you were born with that magic gift to create, nurture and transform lives, so realize your full magical power and potential. It can and will change the course of your life, the lives of members of your family, your community and yes your country.

So, as you engage in the various leadership sessions today, I encourage you to know your worth, never settle, own your power, protect your magic, design the life you want for yourself with courage and joy and most importantly, be an agent of change by being the change you wish to see around you.

Remember, true, genuine and effective leaders are not hand-picked, but emerge, usually after passing through the fire of challenge and enduring the fiery arrows and darts of envy, rejection, jealousy, isolation and criticism. And we all have walked those paths.

Many of you have to walk alone as a result of some of your decisions and unpopular positions you may have to take. However difficult and lonely that road seems, I encourage you all to always stand on principle and not on what is most convenient at the time or on the most popular opinions at that time.

Principles such as honesty, integrity, transparency, love, patience, fairness, justice and faith have all stood the test of time over many centuries. I therefore encourage you to build your leadership brand on those foundational principles and you will never go wrong or have regrets about the road you chose. You may not be liked by some, but your principles will demand the respect from all you come into contact with. You can count on that. I am an example of this. And I have survived, become stronger.

Let this therefore be a day of renewed self discovery, inspiration, sisterhood, connection, and transformation. Let us lift each other up, celebrate every achievement and uniqueness, embellish our tangible and intangible moral attributes, and stand firm in the knowledge that your possibilities are endless.

Also, remember that we were not put on this earth to serve ourselves, but to serve others so our collective cultural fabric is only as strong as the weakest link. Selfless service to others must always be your watch words and calling cards.

So ladies, Thank you for believing in yourselves.
Thank you for being here.

And thank you for carrying forward the “magic” that will shape The Bahamas and indeed the world in the years to come.

Many thanks for your kind invitation, and have a great leadership summit.”
