Multi-Million Dollar Airport on tap for Black Point, Exuma

Bahamian Media News:

Continuing to make good on goals outlined in its ‘Blueprint for Change’ to invest in the Family Islands, the government signed a multi-million dollar contract for the construction of an international airport and related facilities for Black Point, Exuma.

The Contract Signing Ceremony for the Black Point Airside Works was held at the Office of the Prime Minister on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

To the tune of $17.96 million, the contract was entered into with Abaco Aggregate and Cement Company Ltd. for the expansion and remediation of the Black Point Airport, as part of The Family Island Renaissance Project.

Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation the Hon. Chester Cooper underscored the significance of the moment.

“This contract signing today is another milestone in the Family Island Airport Renaissance Project. We are building airports that meet the demands of a growing population, a thriving tourism market, and an increasingly connected Bahamas.  We are expanding opportunities, one island at a time,” he said.

Also present were: Prime Minister and Minister of Finance the Hon. Philip Davis; Minister of Works the Hon. Clay Sweeting; Director of Aviation and Deputy Director General of Tourism, Dr. Kenneth Romer; Anya Symonette, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works; Abaco Aggregate and Cement Company Ltd., President & CEO Kino Simmons and executive leadership; and residents of Black Point.

A new, extended runway, fully compliant with International Civil Aviation Organization standards, will be constructed to accommodate national, regional, and international aircraft.

The people of Black Point will also benefit from a new terminal facility, built to accommodate 70 plus passengers, and outfitted with navigational aids to facilitate night flights. The full scope of works is expected to ramp up commercial airlift opportunities, streamline emergency airlift scenarios, and connect family, friends, and loved ones like never before.

The works are anticipated to begin in September 2025 and will span 12 months.

“This port of entry designation means that you will be able to accommodate direct flights from the USA and other countries, and clear customs and immigration in Black Point,” said DPM Cooper. “This enhanced accessibility, connectivity, and more seamless travel will single-handedly create a level of transformation not seen before in Black Point.”

Throwing his support behind the project, Prime Minister Davis said, “In our Blueprint for Change, and our 2025/26 Budget, we committed to creating more opportunities for more Bahamians, island by island.

“We’ve been driving serious investments, because we’re serious about improving infrastructure, and improving lives.  We’re creating airports of the future across our archipelago, leveraging twenty-first-century technologies to meet the specific needs of each island.”

According to the prime minister, it is all about sustainable, inclusive, and culturally appropriate development.

“What this means is more efficiency, more cost savings, and more transparency in procurement and construction. It means more Bahamians will enjoy better airports, more quickly.  And these airports will not only be best in class, but best in the region,” he said.

Added the Hon. Clay Sweeting, Minister of Works: “Equally important, proper airport infrastructure helps unlock the cultural heartbeat of our communities. With improved access comes greater attendance and participation in regattas, festivals, and homecomings — key pillars of Bahamian heritage and Local Government pride.”

The islands of Eleuthera, Bimini, Cat Island, Long Island, and the Abacos, are among the destinations included in The Family Island Renaissance Project.
