National Breastfeeding Week Underway

Bahamian Media News:

Across The Bahamas, a quiet revolution of care, culture, and community is taking center stage. This October, mothers, families, health professionals, and advocates will come together to celebrate one of the most natural and powerful acts of nurturing -breastfeeding. National Breastfeeding Week 2025 is observed from October 1 to October 7.The Bahamas National Breastfeeding Association (BNBA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Wellness, presents the 2025 theme: “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Creating Sustainable Support Systems”, ensuring a week of education and recognition. The celebration begins early on September 25 with a special Talk Show at 10:30am, featuring Tameco “Sawyer Boy”  Sawyer live on Star 106.5 FM, setting the tone for the important conversations to follow.October 3 takes on a more personal and creative tone with the Breastfed Baby Photo Competition at the Mall at Marathon, beginning at 10am, as mothers showcase the beauty and strength of their natural bond through breastfeeding.Faith and fellowship are at the heart of the October 4 event, when the Breath of Life SDA Church will host a service at 10am, reminding all of the maternal health and wellness of a strong family unit.October 5 marks one of the most anticipated events of the week – the BNBA Awards Luncheon, taking place at the British Colonial Hotel from 2pm to 5:30pm. The luncheon not only celebrates achievements, but also honors individuals whose work has had a lasting impact on breastfeeding advocacy and maternal health. Among this year’s honorees are: Rhonda Kemp, Kelly Farquharson, Bianca Edwards, Tamica Gibson, Dr. Merceline Dahl Regis, Danina Black, and Youlander Bullard – women recognized for their commitment to paving the way for better health outcomes and stronger support systems for mothers and families.

In addition to these remarkable women, three organizations will also be honored for their invaluable contributions: Maranatha SDA Church, Guardian Radio, and Variety Disposal Products. Each has played a unique role in strengthening the national conversation on breastfeeding, health, and wellness. The week continues with the unveiling of a BNBA Mural on October 6 at 10am, a permanent and creative reminder of the movement for awareness and support. On October 7, generosity takes center stage as mothers at Princess Margaret Hospital’s maternity ward will be gifted with care packages at 11am, a touching gesture of community solidarity and encouragement.Though the formal week concludes on October 7, the movement carries on with the Annual BNBA Umbrellathon on October 13, starting at 9am at the Elizabeth Estates Clinic Grounds. The message will continue to resonate later in the month with a Ribbon Pinning in Parliament on October 15, a symbolic gesture of national commitment. It will be followed by the Senior Student Debate in Parliament on October 17 at 4pm, where young voices will once again take the lead in shaping the conversation on public health.
