National Family Sports and Fun Day Success

Bahamian Media News:

National Family Sports and Fun Day brought scores of families together for a day of sports competition, fun and unity, thanks to the Department of Gender and Family Affairs (DGFA), Ministry of Social Services, Information and Broadcasting (MOSSIB).

The event was held on Saturday, July 27, 2024 and was attended by the Minister of MOSSIB, Hon. Myles Laroda, Permanent Secretary Mrs. Phedra Rahming-Turnquest, DGFA official Sheryl Knowles, communications consultant Debbie bartlett, and other Ministry officials, who helped to organize an exciting day designed to deepen family bonds.

It was a day of recreation, fun and entertainment for the entire family, with prizes and surprises for many of the attendees. Trophies were also awarded after the sporting events.

Wilton Russell, National Family Week Family Sports and Fun Day coordinator, planned the day’s activities, which were held at the old Thomas. A Robinson Sports Centre from 12 noon to 5pm.

On Monday, July 29, men and boys are encouraged to attend a Men’s Empowerment Forum at the Ministry’s Hearing Room from 9:30am to 3pm.

On Thursday, July 25, DGFA hosted a Family Empowerment Seminar. It was held from 6-9pm in the Hearing Room at MOSSIB’s headquarters on John F. Kennedy Drive and Bethel Avenue, and it was also hosted on ZOom, to allow for wide Family Island resident participation.

The first speaker was Mr. Wayne Miller, who addressed “Positive Parent and Child Communication”.  He spoke on the importance of spending quality time with children, and using that time to foster positive interactions that will impress on their memories and help mold their future.Representing the Bahamas Psychological association was Dr. Detra Bethel, who spoke about “The importance of Love in a Family”.  She advised on how family members should show love to each other, because not all families show, experience, or have love.  She explained the different love styles and encouraged attendees to find ways to show more love in their own families.

The final speaker represented The Royal Bahamas Police Force. Sgt. Kim McGregor spoke about “The Effects of Domestic Violence in the Home”.  She pointed out that abuse can happen at the hands of women as well as men.
She also spoke about how some people are abused and do not realize that they are being abused. Abuse can be verbal, mental, physical, financial, or even spiritual.

The DGFA will continue to promote initiatives to strengthen Bahamian families throughout the year. One initiative is happening in partnership with the Bahamas Christian Council, where churches throughout the country will host special services on strengthening the family throughout the year.
