National Parenting Programme: Restoring Hope To Communities, One Family At A Time

Press Release

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Services, Information and Broadcasting, Mrs. Phedra Rahming-Turnquest, told participants of the Department of Rehabilitative/Welfare Services Parenting Education and Anger Management programme, that their successful completion of the programme “proves that there is actually hope for us to build a stronger nation.”

Mrs. Rahming-Turnquest told her audience that: “When families shift, communities follow” as strong families build strong communities and strong nations.

“Tonight, our focus turns to one of the strongest foundations in our society — the family.  Our topic, ‘Strengthening the Family, Restoring Hope to the Nation,’ carries deep meaning, because across our communities, families are facing very real challenges — economic pressures, emotional strain, shifting responsibilities, and unresolved experiences that weigh heavily on the heart.

Yet, even with all of this, there is a powerful truth we must hold onto: ‘Strong families build strong nations,’” Mrs. Rahming-Turnquest said in her Opening Address.

“How? Because strength is being rebuilt in your homes, in your minds as you reshape your habits and ultimately in your hearts. To every participant here this evening, I commend you. Your willingness to show up speaks volumes. It shows that you are responsible, and that you have a desire for healing and growth. Your presence says, ‘I am choosing a better path.’ And that choice alone is powerful.”

Held under the auspices of the National Parenting Programme, and as part of the series of activities held in observance of Rehabilitation Month 2025, the Parenting Education and Anger Management Course provides information and the resource tools to help parents nurture their families, improve communication with child/children, and become more involved in their child/children’s education.

The programme also provides specialized classes that assist parents in better managing anger, while also providing a supportive, non-judgmental environment where parents can freely express themselves and seek encouragement.

Permanent Secretary Rahming-Turnquest told participants that every skill they learnt — whether managing emotions, communicating clearly, or responding with wisdom instead of frustration, “is actually moving your family one step closer to peace and stability.”

“Parenting is not easy. Managing anger is not easy. Just being here tonight though is confirmation that change is possible. It may be incremental, but still possible. You are surrounded by professionals who believe in your potential, who see your strengths even when you don’t see them, and who understand that when an individual grows, an entire family shifts. And when families shift, communities follow.”

Mrs. Rahming-Turnquest said every moment a parent chooses patience over anger, or uses a new technique instead of an old habit, he or she is demonstrating to the children that “through consistency, support, and guidance, you are restoring hope, not just to your home, but to the entire Bahamas.”

“National restoration begins right here in forums like these, with individuals who are willing to learn, willing to change, and willing to rise,” P.S. Rahming-Turnquest said.

“As we continue through this month of rehabilitation and renewal, remember that transformation is not instant. It is built decision by decision. It is shaped one conversation at a time. It grows through victories, even if they are small victories, once repeated consistently you will see growth.”

Mrs. Rahming-Turnquest said it was her fervent expectation that the successful completion of the programme would inspire participants “to keep going and also serve as a reminder that you are capable.”

“May you also strengthen your confidence as parents, caregivers, and individuals committed to a better future. Because together, step by step, choice by choice, we can build families that are stable, nurturing, and resilient. By being good examples and allowing your transformation to be seen, we can restore hope in our communities — one family at a time.”
