Holmes Rock Junior High School officially opened on September 1st, 2025 after almost ten years of construction and delays.
Deputy Director of Education, Michelle Bowleg was at the school where seventh graders took part in a special assembly before heading off to class. Bowleg shared her excitement with ZNS News. She said, “it’s going to take us more than this one day and that’s why we’re transiting first the seventh graders and the other grades will be in on Wednesday.”
Jelissa Eugene, a computer science teacher also shared her excitement about the new school. She said, “we’re excited about building the process and getting everyone in and the whole branding and mascot choosing.”
The new school will remove the sentGrand Bahama District Education Officer, Kendris Hield told the seventh graders they we’re in the newest school in the country. He told ZNS News there is no other school in The Bahamas like Holmes Rock Junior High School. “We just want the kids to ensure that they take care of the facilities,” he said.
Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey visited the school on the first day accompanied by Sen. Hon. Kirk Russell. She expressed gratitude to the teachers for their efforts and touted the government’s commitment to education.
A principal is expected to be named and on site in short order.
