New Minimum Wage Considered

Bahamian Media News:

Minister of Labour and the Public Service, the Hon. Pia Glover-Rolle has revealed that the government is considering a new minimum wage while attending a symposium on new labour legislation on Monday.

Glover-Rolle told attendees, “we’ve been in ongoing talks, and those of you who accompanied us with the ILO (International Labour Organization) on this issue. In fact on the 12th of July we met with ILO Senior Economist and Wage Specialist Mr. Patrick Beltzer and some of you had the pleasure of being a part of that especially our trade union congresses.”

The Minister assured stakeholders that they will be included in discussions every step of the way. “You have my commitment in that and in that fact the NTC (National Tripartite Council) will be in the driver’s seat on this particular matter. Not only will you be included but your will be informed because I will make sure that it is not said that our stakeholders were not aware of our plans and were allowed to mistakenly believe that this increase is not a high priority for this government.”

The minimum wage was increased in January 2023 from $210 to $260.
