After a court battle and ruling, Muriel Lightbourne remains President of the Bahamas Nurses Union.

A faction of union executives challenged Lightbourne’s presidency based on her failure to remain in good financial standing with the union. The group contended that this non-financial status invalidated Lightbourne’s presidency and decisions made during that time. Also before the court was the suspension of the union’s Secretary General.

Lightbourne recently told ZNS News, “the judge would have rejected their claim and she would have stated that I was, in fact, financial based on the evidence that was provided and that those decisions, whatever decisions that I would have made, would have stood. There was a decision where we would have suspended the Secretary General as well as our first Vice President. That decision, the judge would have overruled, terming that it was unconstitutional because of some technical issues.”

The nurses union president said that most members of the organization were not pleased. Lightbourne said, “I reminded them that for the most part, this is not the first time the Bahamas Nurses Union was put in court.”

She went further, stating, “we are only there to serve. We are only there to say you are the ten persons that we want to go out there and do what we have to do. Now that don’t make us God.”
