Nurses Union Saga Continues

Bahamian Media News:

Bahamas Nurses Union President, Muriel Lightbourne is speaking out about the ongoing dispute within the union which she says is based on the misappropriation of $60,000 by the previous administration.

Lightbourne spoke with reporters at a press event on Tuesday. She said, “the members said at the AGM (annual general meeting) we want this monies back. And so I have to do what I was instructed to do.”

The union president confirmed that a ruling was handed down by the courts in April concerning the repayment of the misappropriated funds.

Lightbourne also addressed questions about the validity of the current administration of the union. She said, “after much agitation my team at the time we was granted an election in January 19th, 2023.”

According to union treasurer, Sharan Rolle, the finances of the organization were audited in 2023 and 2024. “After the AGM was completed the reports were submitted on to the Secretary General, which is Shavone Brennen, for dissemination to the relevant authorities. At present they are still in her possession,” she said.

Looking forward, Muriel Lightbourne says she intends to seek an increase in salary for nurses in negotiations for a new industrial agreement by October of this year and plans to amend the constitution of the union.

The next elections for the Bahamas Nurses Union is slated for 2026.
