Parliamentary Commissioner, Harrison Thompson met with representatives of three political parties on Friday. The group was assured of a smooth electoral process.
Thompson spoke with ZNS News on Monday about the meeting. He said though there are about 196,000 people on the register many have been removed for reasons since as death. He said, “last election I think it was about 192,000 that was on the register, somewhere around that figure. So it has increased and if you take off those who are removed from the register you’ll see that they increase has been more than just four or five thousand.”
The Parliamentary Commissioner explained how the removal process works. “From 2017 when the continuous register come into play we have removed about 16,000 plus persons from the register. So it’s a continuous process, we move daily as we get the information, particularly on Thursdays when we have all the death notices in the papers. We use the papers, we use the Registrar General’s Office, the funeral homes where possible and we try to get as much information as we possibly can on those deceased persons.”
Thompson also appealed to citizens to register to voter. He said, “I want everyone if they have not registered to go and register as quickly as possible. If they’ve moved, if they’ve transferred from where they were that they would need to come in and have their information transferred to the new constituency or polling division as it might be.”
A press conference is planned for Tuesday, January 20th.
