Senior Pastor of Freeport Bible Church, Pastor Kyle Maycock is sharing his story of struggling with depression for almost two decades.
Maycock recently spoke with ZNS News on the topic saying, “I know what it is. I know that this isn’t me. I know that’s my mind or emotions, whether it be something chemical or whatever, I know that that’s what it is. So I’m able to name it, that’s one. Second, I’ve trained my mind to let my mind say whatever it needs to say but I let the fact confirm what I feel. So if I’m in an environment where I feel like nobody cares, that’s what my mind may tell me but I look around and I see different. So I let the fact determine what is true to me and not my feelings.”
Pastor Maycock also opined on the increase in attempted suicides in the northern Bahamas. He said, “it has been a tremendous uptick and that’s a good thing. Because historically, culture wise, we’ve not done good in the behavioral sciences. We’ve not had respect or appreciation for it. I think that’s been to our detriment.”
Maycock advises those who are feeling overwhelmed mentally or emotionally to speak to professionals. He also said, “anytime you hear a lot of attempted suicides that’s a sign of hopelessness, not necessarily pain. People usually choose to check out when they feel like there’s no way to get better and the emotional, sometimes even mental exhaustion takes a toll and you just want to check out.”
In the past two months there has been one suicide and three attempted suicides in the northern Bahamas.
