Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), the Hon. Fred Mitchell recently responded to a statement released by the Free National Movement (FNM) on August 5th claiming that Mitchell admitted that the economy is in trouble in comments he made on August 2nd.
Mitchell told ZNS News, “what I said is like every mother and father in this country who runs a family that you have to know that at a certain point there are emergencies which come up.”
He added, “our country has an issue in making sure that we have enough credit space in order to deal with any emergencies. We can do that in one of two ways. We can either borrow or we can save. I’m saying at this point the government’s strategy is to save.”
According to Mitchell the FNM wants the government to give them and their friends a bligh from paying taxes. “You want to give off paying taxes. You want poor people to pay and we’re saying that everybody must pay their fair share.”
The statement also alleged that there is discord between Mitchell and the government to which the PLP Chairman said he told the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Michael Pintard is a figment of his imagination.
On the economy Mitchell said, “there’s great momentum in the economy and its moving forward. The country is a beautiful place. Things are trending in the right direction. We are better off than we were four years ago and the young people can look forward to a great future.”
