PLP Denies Citizenship Claims

PLP Denies Citizenship Claims

Bahamian Media News:

Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), the Hon. Fred Mitchell is refuting claims that 300,000 people will receive citizenship to sway the results of the 2026 general election in favor of the government.

The claims came from Families For Justice President, Pastor Glenroy Bethel. He said, “the Progressive Liberal Party, PLP, has decided to turn The Bahamas over to the Haitian community. The plot is to grant citizenship and Bahamian passports to secure a second term in public office.”

The PLP Chairman flatly refuted Bethel’s claims while speaking with ZNS News on Thursday. “There are not 300,000 outstanding applications for citizenship in The Bahamas, that is false. No nationality is being granted citizenship en masse in this country, that is false. Passports have the most secure checks that we have anywhere in the world, that you can find anywhere in the world. So anything that is asserted which says to the contrary that too is false,” he said.

Mitchell called the claims irrational and misleading. He said the Department of Immigration does not receive an influx of citizenship applications each month. “I can tell you that as a fact if the Cabinet deals with even 40 citizenship applications in a month that plenty. And there’s no particular nationality which the government has any designs over. There are laws in the country. The laws are followed, those laws are strictly followed with regards to immigration. Those laws are strictly followed with regards to passports and any information which is said to the contrary is false.”

Mitchell advised PLP supporters and people of good will to have a discerning spirit to separate patent nonsense from what is the truth.
