PM Hails ICJ Ruling As Legal Milestone

Bahamian Media News:

Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis delivered a communication in the House Of Assembly on Wednesday reacting to the recently handed down advisory ruling of the International Court of Justice on climate change.

Mr. Davis told Parliamentarians, “the court ruling confirms that states, countries have legal obligations under international law to protect the environment. That failure to reduce emissions, failure to regulate polluters and failure to assist those harmed by climate crisis are not acts of omission. They are breaches of law.”

The Prime Minister also acknowledged that the court’s ruling is non-binding. He said, “but its authority is unquestionable. It draws from the entire body of international environmental law. It provides guidance to future courts and it offers countries like ours a firm foundation on which to build our case, make our demands and exercise our diplomacy.”

Mr. Davis has been a long time advocate for climate action and financing.
