Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis commented on the impact of the current conflict in the Middle East will have on The Bahamas and the government’s plans to address them while in Mayaguana over the weekend.
While speaking with reporters Mr. Davis expressed concern about The Bahamas’ embassy in Dubai, where a hotel was struck with a missile. He said, “that embassy is not far from the Israeli embassy in that for the UAE (United Arab Emirates) and we’re watching it very carefully to determine what happens. Sadly, Iran has turned its guns on the UAE and we’re monitoring that.”
The Prime Minister also addressed the cost of living as the conflict can impact oil prices. “As I always said the stubborn elephant in our room is the cost of living and we have very little control of costs. With the unrest in the Middle East we expect and it’s projected that oil prices might rise and if that does then all we can do is try to minimize the impact on our citizens by looking how we can either relieve it through the taxes that is now imposed on importation of fuels and or giving relief in some other form or fashion.”
The United States and Israel launched pre-emptive strikes on Iran on Saturday that resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader. Iran retaliated by striking US military bases and other countries in the region with US and or Israel ties.
